Yesterday’s post was about Sensory Processing Disorder, so today I will be reviewing a product that can help people that have SPD.
We were sent The Magic Blanket made by The Original Bean Blanket Company. I was very excited to try it with my son Jake because he gets really “stimmy” at bedtime. He has worn weighted vests and neoprene belts before in school, but they would be much too uncomfortable to wear going to sleep.
Before I go any further, here’s what the company says about their Magic Blankets:
The Calming Power of The Magic Blanket
Recent studies have shown that deep pressure touch, the type of proprioceptive input generated from a weighted blanket, releases serotonin in the brain. This is a neurotransmitter that creates a feeling of calm within our nervous system.
Depression, Anxiety, Aggression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Bipolar Disorder all have a common link: low serotonin levels.
The deep pressure — proprioceptive input — generated from the Magic Blanket signals the brain to release serotonin, which in turn naturally calms and relaxes the body, promoting sleep and stress relief. This effect has already had tremendous success helping to calm children and adults with sensory integration disorder, autism, Rett Syndrome, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD, and Restless Leg Syndrome.
We were sent the Minky fabric blanket in a nice beige color. The blanket weighs 10 pounds and the size is 42″ x 60″. You can select the weight and size by using their size guide, or you can customize one however you want.
I’m really impressed with the quality of the Magic Blanket. The minky fabric is really soft and cuddly and the seams are very secure. The polystyrene pellets used to weigh the blanket are evenly distributed in 6 inch squares throughout the whole blanket. It’s also machine washable. Here’s a close up shot of a corner of the blanket.
So, does it work? It does! Jake has been using this blanket for a while now. At bedtime he’ll ask for his “heavy blanket” and it really does calm him down to go to sleep. Before he falls asleep he’ll feel around for the “beans” and he’ll go to sleep quietly on his own. Much better than the laughing or screaming that he used to do. He’ll also use it while sitting on the couch watching tv.
I’ve tested it out myself because it just looks so inviting. It really conforms to your body and like they say, it’s almost like it’s hugging you.
I really recommend the Magic Blanket because it’s durable, well constructed, and it works for my son! If you know someone that has Sensory Processing Disorder, you should let them know about these blankets. It might give them the sensory input that they need to calm down.
Prices start at $44.95 for a fleece mini blanket and they go up from there depending on the size, weight, and fabric. But really, can you put a price on a good night’s sleep for your child (and you)?! You can buy them directly through The Original Bean Blanket Company.

[...] 7 (April 7) Question: Today I reviewed The Magic Blanket. Tell me one of the fabric choices availvable for The Magic Blanket. (Sorry for the late question. [...]

Your post said the pellets were polystyrene, are they like Styrofoam? Doesn’t the fleece on both sides of the blanket make it very warm. I am thinking about purchasing one but want to make sure I can machine wash and dry the blanket we get and that it is not too warm for my son as he is a hot sleeper.
Thanks
Hi – I ordered a 100% cotton one. They are machine washable which is great. I got the 15lb one for my seven year old son.. I am not sure if it works yet – he likes it ! If he falls asleep before 11.30 tonight, then it will have worked for me!
I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
